HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL ROUNDUP : Santa Clara Victory Marred by Ejections

Santa Clara High’s 34-15 nonleague victory over Bell-Jeff on Saturday night at Rio Mesa High was marred by a bench-clearing brawl in the third quarter and the ejection of two players.

Trailing, 21-0, Bell-Jeff scored its first touchdown on a one-yard run by John Pawlik midway through the third quarter. Immediately after the score, a fight erupted between the teams and both benches cleared.

Santa Clara defensive back Albert Carranza, also the Saints’ quarterback, was ejected after the fight. Two plays later, Bell-Jeff defensive lineman Jason Paris was also ejected for fighting.

Santa Clara (1-3) scored on its first two possessions on a five-yard run by Carranza and a 70-yard run by Paul Soliz (14 carries, 180 yards).

Late in the second quarter, Carranza (five of seven, 82 yards) connected with Billy Luhrs on a 26-yard scoring pass, giving the Saints a 21-0 halftime lead.

Sal Sanchez’s 11-yard touchdown run late in the fourth quarter gave the Saints a 34-8 lead.
