Laguna Hills Rallies in Fourth Quarter

Laguna Hills Coach Steve Bresnahan said his team didn’t do anything differently in the fourth quarter than in the other three quarters Friday night against Dana Hills.

The only thing different was the result.

After being shut down and shut out for three quarters, Laguna Hills rallied behind Fred Kim’s two touchdowns for a 15-9 victory over Dana Hills Friday night at Mission Viejo High School.

Laguna Hills (4-1) entered the fourth quarter trailing, 9-0, but quarterback Justin Vedder led the Hawks on a 10-play, 80-yard drive that Kim capped with a six-yard touchdown run. Vedder set it up by completing two passes for 23 yards and running for 19 yards in three carries, including a 16-yard quarterback keeper on third down to keep the drive alive.

Laguna Hills scored the winning touchdown after forcing Dana Hills to punt from its 36. The snap sailed over punter Randy Hein’s head and Nate Kim tackled Hein at the four with 6:53 remaining.

After an offsides penalty moved Laguna Hills back to the nine, Fred Kim sprinted off tackle nine yards for the touchdown. Vedder then threw to Jamie Maertz for the two-point conversion.

Dana Hills (1-4) took a 3-0 lead in the second quarter on a 27-yard field goal by Eric Knip. The Dolphins pushed the lead to 9-0 later in the second quarter when Robert Lathan intercepted a Vedder pass and returned it 97 yards for a touchdown.
