It didn’t take long for Newbury Park High wide receiver Leodes Van Buren to write his name in the record book, but Panther quarterback Keith Smith had to wait a while longer.

Three plays into Newbury Park’s 36-0 Marmonte League victory over host Channel Islands on Friday night, Van Buren caught a 27-yard touchdown pass from Smith.

The catch made Van Buren the all-time Southern Section leader in receiving yardage, eclipsing the record of 3,389 yards set by J.K. McKay at Bishop Amat.

Late in the first half, Van Buren caught a five-yard pass that broke another record held by McKay, this one for career receptions.

Van Buren has 211 receptions, eclipsing the mark of 207 set by McKay.

Early in the fourth quarter, it was Smith’s turn. He broke former Santa Clara standout Tim Gutierrez’s Ventura County career passing yardage record of 7,272 yards.

Smith needed 282 yards going into the game. A 37-yard pass to Stewart McGougan on his final pass of the night gave Smith 292 yards.

“We really wanted to get these records over with,” Van Buren said. “The next four or five weeks, are going to be real tough. I thought I had the record on the first pass, but I guess I was a little short.”

Van Buren needed 28 yards going into the game to tie McKay’s yardage record. On the first play of the game, Smith connected with Van Buren on a 23-yard pass play.

“There’s been a lot of pressure on us to break these records,” Smith said. “We’ve got three tough games ahead of us. I wasn’t sure if I would get the record tonight, but the receivers made some great catches and our defense did a great job.”

Smith completed 23 of 35 passes for five touchdowns. He was also Newbury Park’s leading rusher with 51 yards in four carries.

Channel Islands (0-5, 0-2) was held to 74 yards of total offense. Raiders’ running back Raul Raya had 35 yards in 20 carries.

Raider defensive lineman Frank Gassman injured his left knee late in the second quarter and was taken to St. John’s hospital.
