Robert Walker rushed for 161 yards and three touchdowns and Louisville committed four late turnovers as No. 24 West Virginia defeated the No. 17 Cardinals, 36-34, Saturday at Morgantown, W.Va.

Walker hadn’t been starting because of a fumbling problem, but came on for starter Jimmy Gray against Louisville and took over.

It helped that West Virginia’s offensive line was opening gaping holes in a Louisville defense that had held opponents to 110 yards rushing per game. The Mountaineers (5-0) finished with 229 yards rushing.

“The offensive line promised me the holes would be there, and they kept their promise,” Walker said. “I kept my promise by running through them.”

Walker fumbled the ball away once early in the game, but kept his composure. “It took my confidence away for a second, but (receiver) Mike Baker helped me out of that,” said Walker, a sophomore. “Being a senior, that’s what he’s supposed to do.”

Louisville is 5-1.

Boston College 31, Rutgers 21--Glenn Foley, who put pressure on himself by bad-mouthing Rutgers last season, passed for 289 yards and four touchdowns to lead the Eagles over the Scarlet Knights in a Big East game at East Rutherford, N.J.

The victory was the third in a row for Boston College (3-2, 3-1), which rallied from an early 11-point deficit. Rutgers is 3-2, 1-1.

Foley completed 23 of 31 passes, including 11-yard touchdown passes to Clarence Cannon and Pete Mitchell, a six-yarder to Darnell Campbell and a nine-yarder to Keith Miller.

The last one came after Rutgers got within 24-21 with 7:08 to play on a nine-yard touchdown run by Terrell Willis. Foley then drove the Eagles 68 yards in eight plays for the game-clinching score.
