Freshman Danny Wuerffel looked impressive with his four touchdown passes until No. 5 Florida’s other quarterbacks also picked Louisiana State apart at will.

Wuerffel threw for 221 yards before sitting down in the third quarter to watch his teammates finish off a 58-3 victory Saturday night at Baton Rogue, La.

It was the worst defeat in LSU’s 100-year history.

“The first thing I told (LSU Coach Curley Hallman) was I’m sorry it got out of hand,” said Florida Coach Steve Spurrier. “It’s not a real good feeling when you beat somebody that bad.”

Terry Dean picked up where Wuerffel left off, hooking up with Sorola Palmer on a 34-yard touchdown pass play to make it 44-3 late in the third quarter. Dean completed five of six passes for 68 yards for the Gators, 5-0 overall and 4-0 in the Southeastern Conference.

LSU, in falling to 2-4 and 1-3, gave up more than 50 points in once-foreboding Death Valley for the first time ever. LSU’s previous worst loss was a 63-9 setback to Texas A&M; in 1914.

No. 11 Tennessee 28, Arkansas 14--Heath Shuler tied a 23-year-old school record with his 18th touchdown pass of the season and scored two touchdowns at Little Rock, Ark.

Arkansas reached the Tennessee 26 with four minutes to play, but Scott Galyon intercepted Barry Lunney Jr.’s fourth-down pass.

Shuler’s 53-yard pass play to Craig Faulkner led to the touchdown that put the Volunteers (5-1, 3-1) ahead, 14-7, and Shuler’s 11-yard throw to Faulkner made it 21-7 early in the third quarter. Shuler’s seven-yard run increased the lead to 28-14 with 6:11 to play.

Shuler wound up 19 of 26 for 307 yards.

Arkansas is 3-3, 2-2.
