PRO FOOTBALL SPOTLIGHT / A GLANCE AT THIS WEEK IN THE NFL : TONIGHT’S GAME: Houston Oilers at Buffalo Bills, Channel 7, 6 p.m.

Welcome to the scene of the crime for the Oilers.

In the AFC wild-card game last season, Buffalo rallied from 32 points behind to win, 41-38, in overtime. It was the greatest comeback in NFL history.

Such offensive displays has been elusive since then.

The last few seasons these were two of the dominant offenses, but this season both teams are struggling. Last week against the Giants, Bills Coach Marv Levy let quarterback Jim Kelly call his own plays to speed up the offense. The Bills won, 17-14, after Kelly connected on an eight-yard touchdown pass play to Pete Metzelaars with 2:27 left. But 17 points wasn’t exactly a big day.

Oddly, the Bills lead the NFL in rushing but have not scored a rushing touchdown.

Thurman Thomas had 122 yards rushing against the Giants, the league’s best defense, and he is second in AFC in yards (357) and total yards (406).

Houston has never allowed Thomas 100-yard rushing game in three regular-season meetings.

Buddy Ryan’s Oiler defense has given up 79 points, fifth-most in AFC. The unit is great one game and poor the next. Two weeks ago (last week the Oilers had a bye), it had trouble with the Ram offense. That’s not a misprint.

The week before that, they shut out the Chiefs. The Chiefs started Dave Krieg instead of Joe Montana in that game, but the shutout was impressive anyway.

Warren Moon has struggled this season. He has eight interceptions, four touchdowns and his passer rating (61.8) is the fourth lowest in the NFL. Moon’s 310 yards against the Rams were the 36th time he has passed for 300 or more yards, third-best in league history.
