CASTAIC — Another in a series of brawls between Latino and black inmates at the Peter J. Pitchess Honor Rancho erupted Tuesday when an argument between two inmates over a food tray spread to 200 other prisoners, authorities said.
The 6:15 p.m. melee, in which inmates struck each other with trays and cooking pots in the East Facility’s dining hall, lasted about 10 minutes before a Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department Emergency Response Team broke it up by using “stingball” grenades and pepper spray, Sheriff’s Department spokesman Larry Mead said.
Fifteen prisoners suffered minor injuries and were treated at the facility’s medical clinic, while five others were taken to County-USC Medical Center for moderate injuries, Mead said.
No deputies were injured.
The inmates involved in the fight will be transferred to other locations in the jail, Mead said.
