PREP NOTES : Byrd Makes History in Ivy League
Former Rancho Alamitos standout Jeff Byrd, whose 64 touchdowns are the second most scored in Orange County, has become the first freshman to score a touchdown in an Ivy League game.
Byrd scored after picking up a blocked punt and running it in 12 yards in Columbia’s 27-24 loss to Colgate on Oct. 2. He had earlier blocked a punt himself.
This is the first year freshmen have been eligible to play varsity football in the Ivy League.
Byrd, who rushed for a county single-season record 2,596 yards in 1992, has been used sparingly on offense, rushing twice this season for four yards, but he has been used extensively on special teams as a returner and kick blocker.
