If it were a baseball game, you would say Chris Carr had the game-winning hit.

Come to think of it, you can still say that.

Carr, Glendale High’s 6-foot-1, 220-pound linebacker, sacked Pasadena quarterback Chris McAlister on a fourth-down play, preserving the Dynamiters’ 20-14 victory in the Pacific League opener Thursday night at Glendale High.

Carr, still short of breath from chasing McAlister all game, expressed his feelings in one word: “Relief.”

McAlister, a transfer from St. Francis, ran for 60 yards against Glendale, but the Dynamiters stopped him when they had to.

Pasadena had fourth down and six from the Glendale 11 with 1 minute 4 seconds left.

McAlister faded to pass, scrambled for several seconds, then tried to turn upfield. Carr nailed him for a six-yard loss.

Glendale (5-1) rallied from a 14-8 deficit. The eventual winning score was a 10-yard touchdown pass from Ramon Jose to Neal Sowter with 4:55 left in the game.

Jose, who has been called on to pass more often in recent games, completed eight of 17 passes for 86 yards. He threw three touchdown passes and had three interceptions.

The biggest pass he threw was one he never saw. On the drive in which Glendale scored the winning touchdown, Jose threw an interception that was returned deep into Glendale territory. However, officials called roughing the passer because Jose was blindsided after he threw the ball.

The penalty gave Glendale the ball at the Pasadena 25. The Dynamiters scored three plays later.

McAlister was Pasadena’s offense. He completed five of 11 passes for 42 yards.

His eight-yard touchdown run gave the Bulldogs (3-3) a 7-6 lead in the second quarter.

His three-yard touchdown pass to Gerard Khorozian made it 14-6 with 7:20 to play in the third quarter. Glendale got even on Jose’s 17-yard touchdown pass to Ed Soto and Jose’s pass to Sowter for a two-point conversion four minutes later.
