Even with a most-valuable-player trophy safely tucked away in his house, Schilling said he still couldn’t believe that his team had just won the pennant. “I got to sleep about 5:30 in the morning, and when I woke up I had to turn on ESPN just to make sure we really won,” Schilling said.

Schilling was one of several players who stopped by the Phillies’ clubhouse Thursday, and, when he got there, he said he didn’t know that Manager Jim Fregosi had named him the Game 1 starter.

“I don’t think (the victory) has set in yet for anybody,” Fregosi said. “Several of the players were in here last night and we got to talking about it, and I told them that this is something you won’t really be able to appreciate until you are not a player anymore.”
