Baughman’s Passing Leads Bolsa Grande Past Santiago, 39-28

Brian Baughman passed for 379 yards, the 10th best total in Orange County history, and five touchdowns to pace Bolsa Grande to a 39-28 victory over Santiago in a Garden Grove League game Friday at Garden Grove High School.

The victory was only the second in the league for the Matadors (3-3, 2-1) since 1990.

Bolsa Grande scored three touchdowns in four minutes to take a 20-7 lead early in the second quarter. Baughman connected with wide receiver Love Jefferson for 70 and 81 yards. Bolsa Grande’s David Price recovered a fumble and ran eight yards for another touchdown.

Love caught five passes for 172 yards.

Bolsa Grande gained a 27-7 advantage when Baughman combined with Price for a 37-yard touchdown pass with 2:08 left in the first half.

“We worked hard to eliminate dropped ball and tonight it showed,” said Bolsa Grande Coach Gary Stevens. “If we can only eliminate some mistakes we would win a lot more ball games.”

Santiago (0-6, 0-3) scored 14 quick points early in the third quarter to narrow the gap to 27-21. Christian Cortez scored on runs of two and five yards for Santiago. Both touchdowns were set up by turnovers.
