La Habra Surprises Troy, 38-20

La Habra shocked Troy, 38-20, Friday night in a Freeway League opener at La Habra High.

The Highlanders (2-4, 1-0 in league) jumped ahead, 31-0, and didn’t look back, dropping the Warriors to 3-2-1, 0-1.

La Habra running back Johnny Yoo scored three first-half touchdowns and finished with 137 yards in 16 carries and three pass receptions for 53 yards.

After a 30-yard field goal by Will McIntosh, Yoo caught a 45-yard pass from Sonje Berg to put the Highlanders up, 10-0.

The next two times Yoo touched the ball, he ended up in the end zone, on runs of 51 and 46 yards. Troy quarterback Brian Logan completed a 19-yard pass to Nick Ruzzi to put the Warriors on the board.

Berg hit Erik Abbott from five yards out for the Highlanders’ final touchdown of the half and a 31-6 lead.

Troy struck first in the second half, when Logan found Ruzzi on a 37-yard touchdown pass.

Running back Donny Cisneros capped the Highlanders’ scoring with a one-yard run late in the third quarter.

Logan and Ruzzi hooked up a third time, on a 38-yard touchdown pass, to bring the Warriors within striking distance.

Berg completed 12 of 22 passes for 202 yards and two touchdowns, and Logan completed seven of 18 for 167 yards. Ruzzi caught six passes for 152 yards and three touchdowns.
