SOUTH GATE : Citywide Road Repairs Under Way

Share

The city embarked last week on the first phase of a major street repair program that will fix or replace all 128 miles of the city’s streets within 10 years.

The $17-million repair program was developed after a yearlong study analyzed the condition of every block of city roads and recommended repairs.

The first stage, which began Thursday, is a $700,000 project paid for through state gasoline tax funds that will fix 25% of the city’s roads in four weeks. About 85% of the roads should be repaired within three years, said Shafique Naiyer, associate civil engineer.

During the first phase, streets that are cracked but in fair condition will be slurry-sealed, a process that mixes sand, water and an asphalt emulsion.

Sealing streets that are in fair condition should extend their use by seven years and save the city millions of dollars in road reconstruction, Naiyer said. The repairs should be completed by late November.

Streets will be closed for repairs from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Residents will be notified when to move their cars to avoid being towed.
