SOUTH : Liquor Store Plan Worries Neighbors

Share

Shorter business hours and additional security are among the conditions the city Planning Commission was asked to impose on owners of a liquor store destroyed during last year’s riots.

“This area has a lot of gangs, and with the liquor store, there were always a lot of people hanging out in front of it,” said Victor Castro, an employee at Alejandra’s Furniture in the 4600 block of Broadway. “We know it will reopen, but we want a guard posted there to help out if there are any problems.”

Castro and other neighbors and business owners presented their comments at a recent public hearing on the store before the commission. Chul Jae and Chun Cha Lee have applied for a permit to rebuild a 2,315-square-foot store at 4060 S. Broadway and a permit to sell a full line of liquor.

The store attracted gunfire because alleged gang members would often linger in front of it, said Sylvia Castillo, a member of the Community Coalition for Substance Abuse and Prevention. The Lees did not respond to inquiries made by City Times through a representative.

The case is expected to go before the commission Nov. 4.
