Steve McLaughlin kicked a 27-yard field goal as time expired to cap No. 11 Arizona’s come-from-behind 27-24 victory over Stanford in a turnover-filled game Saturday night.

Spencer Wray recovered Stanford quarterback Steve Stenstrom’s fumble, the Cardinal’s seventh turnover, with 40 seconds remaining. After three quarterback keepers, McLaughlin kicked his game-winner to boost Arizona to its best start at 6-0 overall and 3-0 in the Pacific 10.

Arizona fought back from a 17-0 deficit in the first 15:50 of the second half and went ahead 24-17 late in the third quarter.

Ellery Roberts pulled the Cardinal into a 24-24 tie on a seven-yard touchdown run, capping a 74-yard drive with 12:43 remaining.

In the final minute, Stanford was stuck deep in its own territory when Akil Jackson sacked Stenstrom. The ball popped loose, with Wray recovering for Arizona on the Stanford eight to set up the winning field goal.

Stanford dropped to 2-4, 0-3.

Stenstrom threw for 339 yards and two touchdowns in completing 30 of 47 passes, but the Cardinal managed only eight rushing yards in 22 carries against the nation’s No. 1-rated defense against the run.

Arizona managed only 240 total yards--142 of them on the ground--against Stanford, ranked last in the Pac-10 in rushing defense and total defense.

McLaughlin had missed a 29-yard go-ahead field goal late in the third quarter. His 50-yarder tied it 17-17 with 10:54 left in the period, and the Wildcats’ defense seemingly had gained the momentum.

Billy Johnson’s two-yard run put Arizona ahead 24-17 with 1:08 remaining in the third quarter, capping a 46-yard drive after an interception by Wildcat Jey Phillips.

Then Roberts’ touchdown tied it.

Each team turned the ball over twice in the first quarter before 90 minutes of rain ended, and the second turnover that Stanford recovered, on Chuck Levy’s fumbled punt runback, set up a 16-yard touchdown pass from Stenstrom to Justin Armour on the first play of the second quarter. That hiked Stanford’s lead to 17-0.
