OLYMPIC LEAGUE FOOTBALL : Brethren Christian Scores 27 Consecutive Points, Wins

Brethren Christian broke open a 7-7 tie in the second half and cruised the rest of the way, beating Whittier Christian, 34-14, in the teams’ league opener Saturday night at Whittier College.

Despite being outgained by the Heralds, 127-125, in total yards in the first half, the Warriors (5-1, 1-0) led, 7-0, at halftime. Keith Washington capped a four-play, 84-yard drive with a 71-yard touchdown run to put the Warriors on the scoreboard.

After the Heralds (0-5-1, 0-1) tied the score on a Mac Myers to Joe Rivera five-yard touchdown pass, the Warriors bounced back to score 27 consecutive points to put the game out of reach.

Washington ran in from one yard for the Warriors’ only score in the third quarter. Brethren Christian quarterback Reggie Davis then scored on a one-yard run, then one minute later scored on a 36-yard interception return. Kurt Cuellar capped the Warriors’ scoring with a 41-yard run with about three minutes left.

Myers connected with Rivera on a 19-yard touchdown pass with seconds remaining for the Heralds.

Washington led all rushers with 118 yards in 10 carries, and Mark Stump added 75 yards in eight rushes for Brethren Christian. Nick Valdez led the Heralds with 96 yards in 23 carries.

Myers completed three of nine passes for 55 yards, all to Rivera. He also had one pass intercepted.
