Shawn Burr scored three goals and Ray Sheppard broke a third-period tie to give the Detroit Red Wings a 6-4 victory over the Buffalo Sabres Monday night at Buffalo, N.Y.

“I felt like an offensive player tonight,” Burr said. “I actually got four. I tipped their first one in, too.”

Burr, playing in only his third game of the season, said he had to take advantage of the absence of fellow left wing Dallas Drake from the Red Wings lineup. Drake is out indefinitely with a wrist injury.

The Red Wings ended a four-game losing streak while Buffalo extended its losing streak to six games. For the fifth time in those six losses, the Sabres were tied or ahead going into the final period.

Sheppard, who broke into the NHL with Buffalo in 1988, beat Sabre goaltender Dominik Hasek with a short low shot at 6:20 of the final period while Buffalo’s Wayne Presley sat out a cross-checking penalty.

Montreal 4, Quebec 2--Guy Carbonneau assisted on first-period goals by Ron Wilson and Kevin Haller as the Montreal Canadiens won at Quebec.

The Montreal victory continued a curious pattern in meetings between the provincial rivals. Dating to last season, the Canadiens have won the last four games in Quebec, while the Nordiques have done likewise in Montreal.

Stephan Lebeau and Benoit Brunet, who scored into an empty net with 42 seconds left, had the other Canadien goals.

Dallas 5, Chicago 3--Mike Modano scored twice and added an assist to lead the stars at Chicago.

Darcy Wakaluk, playing his first game in goal this season for the Stars, contributed an assist during a three-goal Dallas first period.

Wakaluk saves on a shot by Joe Murphy from point-blank range at 12:38 and on a 50-foot slap shot from Steve Smith at 13:08 helped preserve the Stars’ third victory.

Winnipeg 6, Edmonton 3--Kris King scored his first goal of the season early in the third period at Winnipeg to put the Jets ahead to stay.

King broke a 3-3 tie at 5:50 of the third and Keith Tkachuk widened the margin to 5-3 less than three minutes later.
