PRO FOOTBALL DAILY REPORT : RAIDERS : Shell’s Solution: Bring Back Replay

Share

Raider Coach Art Shell was certain that the Denver Broncos’ Arthur Marshall did not score a touchdown Monday night on the 27-yard, fourth-quarter pass he received from quarterback John Elway.

Shell was not so sure about the fourth-quarter pass to Derek Russell that the Broncos insisted was a touchdown.

Marshall was given a touchdown when it was ruled defensive back Derrick Hoskins had rolled him into the end zone. Russell was not given a touchdown when it was ruled he was out of bounds.

So neither team was happy.

But Shell has a solution to all of the controversy: bring back instant replay.

The use of videotape to overrule officials was voted out by NFL owners because it was believed that the long delays were worse than the evils they were supposed to correct.

“I felt somewhere along the line, they would have refined it,” Shell said of the replay system. “But anything that will make sure that some mistake, some human error, will not cost you a football game, I’m for.”
