SEASON AT A GLANCE: Smith, 5-foot-8, 180 pounds, is the state’s leading rusher and scorer. In six games, he has amassed 1,506 yards in 131 carries and has scored 25 touchdowns, including six on kickoff and punt returns.
WEEK AT A GLANCE: One of the main reasons for the Mounties’ 6-0 start is Smith--and his remarkable ability to run around defenders and into the end zone. Last week in the Mounties’ 63-9 rout of Mar Vista of San Diego, Smith scored seven touchdowns, which tied Steve Tetrick of L.A. Baptist (1972) for second in the Southern Section record book for touchdowns in a game. Dave Johnson of Cantwell (1969) and David Dotson of Valley View (1991) scored eight touchdowns. Smith gained 305 yards in 19 carries and scored on runs of six, seven, 23, 44 and 50 yards. Smith, who left the game late in the third quarter, also scored on a 60-yard interception return and a 35-yard punt return and was named the Cal-Hi Sports state athlete of the week.
