Western Shuts Out Brea-Olinda

Western dominated both sides of the ball, rolling over Brea-Olinda, 35-0, in an Orange League game Thursday night at Western High School.

Pioneer quarterback Brandon Brennan was nearly perfect, completing 16 of 20 passes for 219 yards and three touchdowns.

The Pioneers (5-1-1, 2-0) controlled the ball in both halves, scoring two touchdowns in the second quarter and adding three in the fourth.

Brennan connected on a 12-yard scoring pass to Vince Branstetter midway through the second quarter, then threw a 19-yard touchdown pass to Marques Robinson with only 13 seconds left in the first half to put the Pioneers up, 14-0, at halftime.

Brennan connected on his third touchdown pass early in the fourth quarter, a 50-yard strike to Jason Covarrubias to all but put the game out of reach.

Fullback Justin Starkey scored on a 32-yard run midway through the final quarter, and Damian Guerrero fell on a blocked punt with just over four minutes remaining to cap the scoring.

Brea quarterback Paul Chiotti completed four of eight passes for 78 yards, and was intercepted once. Casey King led the Wildcats (2-5, 0-2) with 58 yards in 12 carries, and Dawn Johnson led Western with 36 yards in six carries.

The Pioneers’ special teams scored a touchdown to ice the victory late in the fourth quarter on a recovered blocked punt in the end zone.
