One man was killed and another was in critical condition Friday night after a shooting in an apartment complex, police said.

The dead man, identified by a relative as Andre Thompson, 22, and an unidentified man were shot at the El Dorado Inn apartments in the 3300 block of West Lincoln Avenue, police and neighbors said. Investigators said they had no motive or suspects.

Residents of the large, three-story apartment complex in western Anaheim said they heard about eight to 10 shots about 3:30 p.m.

“They were popping off. It had to be one of those automatics,” said Trena Johnson, 46, a resident who tended to one of the wounded men.

Johnson said she heard the gunfire and then found the unidentified victim outside her apartment near a swimming pool in the complex’s courtyard. She said he had been shot three times.

Thompson was shot through the head, according to residents.

Both men were taken to local hospitals, said Sgt. Steve Rodig. Police said some residents reported seeing a third person being driven from the complex just moments after the shootings. Investigators said that person may have been wounded in the gunfire, but they could not confirm it late Friday.

Investigators said they did not know what prompted the shooting. But Johnson said the wounded man told her he knew his attacker and that he owed someone about $1,000, she said.

“What a waste,” Johnson said. “The violence does not stop.”
