BASEBALL / DAILY REPORT : AROUND THE MAJORS : Fregosi’s Father Is the Last to Know

Fregosi knew Thursday that he had been chosen manager of the year by the Associated Press, but he said he purposely didn’t tell his father, Archie, who has spent the postseason second-guessing his son.

“I thought, let him find out by himself,” Fregosi laughed, “just to show him. Then he will rag on me about not telling him.”

Fregosi said his hardest time as a manager was in 1980 with the Angels, because he didn’t know how to handle things then. “I would run in a closet and hide,” he said. But he says that experience prepared him for last season in Philadelphia, when he believes he did his best job of managing, even though his team finished last at 70-92.

“We had so many adversities and injuries,” Fregosi said. “And managing in Philly is tough. I think Boston, New York and Philadelphia are the hardest places to manage because of the pressure. I think when I am ready to retire, I will manage in the Midwest.”
