PREP FOOTBALL ROUNDUP : Roberson Leads University to First Victory
Ricco Roberson rushed for 126 yards, scored a touchdown and passed for another as University won its first game of the season, defeating Saddleback, 16-14, in a Sea View League game Saturday at Irvine High.
Roberson connected with Donte Cuavers for a 45-yard touchdown as time expired in the first half to spark a sluggish Trojan offense. It turned out to be the Trojans’ only pass completion. The senior, who alternated between quarterback and running back throughout the game, finished with 28 carries.
University (1-6, 1-3) trailed, 7-6, at halftime but took the lead on Brett Lockwood’s 35-yard third-quarter field goal. The Trojans extended the lead to 16-7 on Roberson’s 37-yard run, which was set up when University linebacker T.J. Wilmott sacked Daniel Ruvolo and recovered the forced fumble at the Saddleback 37. Roberson scored on the next play.
Saddleback (2-5, 1-3) scored first on Danny Gonzalez’s five-yard run late in the second quarter. The Roadrunners closed the gap to 16-14 when Ruvolo connected with Gilbert Guzman with 1:42 left.
But the ensuing on-side kick attempt went out of bounds, and University ran out the clock.
