NHL ROUNDUP : Flyers Are Alone In First Place

Rod Brind’Amour scored twice and Eric Lindros had a goal and an assist for the Philadelphia Flyers, who took over sole possession of first place in the Atlantic Division with a 5-2 victory over the Ottawa Senators Wednesday night at Ottawa.

Lindros and Mark Recchi gave the Flyers (8-2) a 2-0 lead in the first period. Lindros scored on a 40-foot wrist shot off the far post behind Ottawa goalie Craig Billington at 5:26. Recchi scored off a rebound at 7:11, with Lindros earning an assist.

Brind’Amour made the score 3-0 at 6:22 of the second period when he and linemate Josef Beranek beat Billington after an Ottawa turnover near center ice.

Dallas 5, Hartford 1--Mike Modano scored his ninth and 10th goals to lead the Stars at Dallas.

Modano scored in the first and third periods and also added an assist. Russ Courtnall and Grant Ledyard each had a goal and an assist as the Stars remained unbeaten at home (3-0-2).

Andy Moog was in line for his 19th shutout until Patrick Poulin scored a power-play goal with 5:15 left.

Winnipeg 4, Tampa Bay 3--Defenseman Teppo Numminen scored his first goal of the season with 12:19 remaining in the third period to give the Jets the victory at St. Petersberg, Fla.

Numminen’s wrist shot from the right point into the top left corner of the net surprised Tampa Bay goaltender Daren Puppa, who was screened on the play.

Buffalo 5, Calgary 3--Alexander Mogilny returned to action and scored a power-play goal in the first period at Calgary as the Sabres won for the first time since opening night.

Wayne Presley, Bob Sweeney, Yuri Khmylev and Randy Wood also scored for the Sabres, whose eight-game winless streak included a seven-game losing string.

Washington 4, Vancouver 2--Keith Jones, Brian Curran, Todd Krygier and Mike Ridley scored for the Capitals in the victory at Vancouver.
