Dodgers’ No. 1 Pick Dreifort Honored as Top Amateur Player

Former Wichita State relief pitcher Darren Dreifort, the Dodgers’ first-round draft choice and the second player selected overall this year, was named Wednesday as the winner of USA Baseball’s Golden Spikes Award, given annually to the nation’s outstanding amateur baseball player.

Dreifort, a member of the 1992 Olympic team, had an 11-1 record last season with a 2.48 earned-run average in 30 appearances as Wichita State advanced to the NCAA championship game before losing to LSU. Also serving as the Shockers’ designated hitter, he had a .327 average with 22 home runs.

“With his arm and desire, he’s going to be a definite major league pitcher, and probably a better hitter than (Orel) Hershiser,” said scout Gil Bassetti, who represented the Dodgers at the USA Baseball luncheon here on the opening day of the U.S. Olympic Congress.

After signing with the Dodgers on Sept. 7, Dreifort reported to the Instructional League. He said the team has not given him any indication of the role they see him playing--starter, long reliever, middle reliever or closer.

“I’ve been in the bullpen for almost three years, and that’s a lot of fun,” he said. “But as long as I’m getting a chance to pitch, it doesn’t matter where I’m coming from.”

Among other finalists for the Golden Spikes Award were Wright State pitcher Brian Anderson, the Angels’ first-round draft choice and the third selection overall, and Arizona State catcher Paul LoDuca, another Dodger prospect.

“We’re really pleased to have two players nominated,” Bassetti said. “It speaks of something. Maybe we’re on the way back.”

Previous Golden Spikes Award winners include Bob Horner, Tim Wallach, Will Clark, Jim Abbott, Robin Ventura, Ben McDonald and Phil Nevin.
