OAK TREE : Black and Gonzalez Escape Injury in Spill
Jockeys Corey Black and Sal Gonzalez Jr. escaped injury in a spill during the second race Wednesday at Santa Anita.
Riding favored Sky Bryn, Black was second, chasing eventual winner Blako, when his colt jumped the track marks left by the starting gate in the upper stretch. Black fell off and appeared to be clipped by Late Night Landing, who was ridden by Gonzalez, who also went down.
After being examined at the track’s first aid station, Black went to Arcadia Methodist Hospital for precautionary X-rays. They proved negative and he was released later in the day.
Gonzalez, who was involved in a spill last Saturday, returned to ride his three remaining mounts.
A 3-year-old maiden trained by Michael Whittingham, Sky Bryn cost himself a victory on Oct. 17 when he jumped the track marks nearing the wire, and he did the same thing Wednesday when going under the wire the first time around in the 1 1/8-mile race.
