THE SOUTHLAND FIRESTORM : ANIMAL SAFETY : Efforts to Save Pets, Livestock Begin
While many animals rescued from deadly brush fires earlier this week returned home Thursday, the county mobilized its efforts to save domestic animals and livestock threatened by late afternoon blazes.
“The whole world is jumping,” Kathy Jenks, director of the Ventura County Department of Animal Regulation, said late Thursday after a morning of relative calm. “We’re moving back out.”
Jenks said it was too early to tell how many animals would be rescued. But she said 20 horses that had been sent to the Ventura County Fairgrounds earlier in the week were returned to their owners. Another 72 horses remained at the grounds Thursday.
“If you’re missing horses, check out at the west end of Ventura County,” Jenks said. “We can make arrangements to transport the horses back to where they belong.” Call 388-4341 for information.
