PRO FOOTBALL / DAILY REPORT : RAIDERS : Situation With Chargers Is Familiar

Share

Ever since they lost twice to San Diego a year ago, the Raiders have been pointing to Sunday’s rematch with the Chargers at the Coliseum. With the Chargers on a two-game losing streak, the timing could not be better for the Raiders, who have won their last two.

Raider linebacker Winston Moss, however, remembers two years ago, when the teams met under similar circumstances.

“They came in here struggling and we were coming off a big win,” Moss said Thursday. “And they beat us.”

That was on Oct. 6, 1991, when the Chargers traveled to the Coliseum with an 0-5 record to play the Raiders, who had upset the San Francisco 49ers a week earlier. The Chargers defeated the Raiders, 21-13, behind quarterback John Friesz.

With Stan Humphries, who started both games against the Raiders last season, still bothered with a shoulder injury, Friesz will get the call against the Raiders Sunday. This season Friesz has completed 53 of 96 passes for 578 yards and two touchdowns with two interceptions.

With the emergence of Alexander Wright, Rocket Ismail and James Jett, Raider wide receiver Willie Gault has been missing in action after six games this season. Gault, a starter for the Raiders the last five seasons, has only eight catches for 64 yards.

While his production for the Raiders has dropped this season, Gault’s acting work has caught on. Over the last two weeks, Gault, 33, has had television speaking roles in CBS’ “In the Heat of the Night” and HBO’s “Tales From the Crypt.”
