Frandsen Leads Way as Canyon Outduels Saugus in 5 Games

Darcy Frandsen had a career-high 32 kills to lead Canyon High to a 15-11, 12-15, 11-15, 16-14, 15-3 come-from-behind victory Thursday over visiting Saugus in a Foothill League girls’ volleyball match.

Susan Brondell added 23 kills and four service aces for Canyon (13-1, 7-1).

Saugus (8-2, 6-2) nearly won the match in four games before running out of gas in the fifth. The Centurions trailed, 14-5, in Game 4 before roaring back to tie the score at 14-14.

In other girls’ volleyball matches:

Harvard-Westlake d. St. Bernard, 15-1, 15-3, 15-11--Lesley Coben had five kills and Lindsay Powers added 10 assists as the undefeated Wolverines (13-0, 11-0) clinched their second consecutive Mission League title.

La Reina d. Carpinteria, 15-5, 15-6, 7-15, 15-7--Amy Gusick had 21 kills, six blocks and three service aces as host La Reina (11-1, 8-0) won its seventh in a row and clinched the Tri-Valley League title.

Bell-Jeff d. Cantwell Sacred Heart, 15-0, 15-7, 15-11--Letty Cabrera had 10 kills for visiting Bell-Jeff (16-1, 12-0), which clinched at least a tie for the Camino Real League title with its 14th victory in a row.

Royal d. Camarillo 15-5, 15-6, 15-7--Jenny Treglown paced the Highlanders with 13 kills in a Marmonte League match at Royal (9-5, 8-4). Teri Enright added nine kills and Heidi Ferguson had 26 assists.

Montclair Prep d. Calabasas, 16-14, 15-4, 8-15, 6-15, 15-8--Vanessa Richlin (18 kills, 16 assists) and Reagan Greene (17 kills, 21 assists) carried the Mounties (8-4) in the nonleague victory. Calabasas fell to 2-9.

Buena d. Rio Mesa, 15-0, 15-7, 15-2--Jennifer Pappas had six kills and Beth Ann McGill tallied 15 assists for the Bulldogs in a Channel League match at Buena (8-4 in league play).

Birmingham d. Monroe, 15-11, 6-15, 15-6, 15-10--Maricela Valdez had 17 kills to lead the Braves in a Valley Pac-8 Conference match at Birmingham (8-4, 7-2 in conference play). Setter Valery Vargas had 45 assists.

L.A. Baptist d. Paraclete, 15-11, 15-12, 9-15, 16-14--Darcie Frazier had 25 kills for the Knights in a nonleague match at L.A. Baptist (8-5). Lori Neville added 14 kills and Tunde Hrotko had 41 assists.

MEN’S SOCCER

Cal Lutheran 8, Caltech 0--The Kingsmen got three goals from Jan Hammerbold, two from Willie Ruiz and one each from Ryan Dobbins, Kevin Hesser and Aaron Muth to clinch the SCIAC Western Division. Cal Lutheran (13-4-1, 9-0-1) will host Claremont on Saturday for the SCIAC title.

GIRLS’ TENNIS

Burbank 12, Hart 6--Corie Simmons and Analisa Swan, playing No. 1 and No. 2 singles, each swept three matches to help the Bulldogs (15-1, 8-0) wrap up the championship in the final Foothill League match of the season.
