COLLEGE FOOTBALL : O’Neil Back on Target as Oregon Wins, 46-23 : Pac-10: He comes off six-interception performance to throw for 327 yards and three touchdowns in victory over Cougars.
Danny O’Neil, who had six passes intercepted last week, came back to throw for 327 yards and three touchdowns Saturday to lead Oregon to a 46-23 victory over Washington State.
“I didn’t doubt my confidence or my ability to come back and lead this team to victory,” O’Neil said. “The only thing that was hurt was my pride, and my pride bounces back kind of quickly.”
Cristin McLemore caught one touchdown pass and threw another for the Ducks (5-3, 2-3 in the Pacific 10), who beat the Cougars (5-4, 3-3) for the seventh time in their last eight games.
Oregon outscored Washington State, 27-9, in the final two quarters, including two touchdowns in the last 5 1/2 minutes.
O’Neil, who had his worst game of the season a week earlier in a 21-6 loss at Washington, was 19 for 27 and was not intercepted against the Cougars, despite an often fierce pass rush. He was sacked six times, five in the first half.
Oregon’s Ricky Whittle scored on a 36-yard screen pass. He also caught a 30-yard pass and had runs of 11 and 12 yards on the first of the Ducks’ three touchdown drives in the fourth quarter.
The 46 points were the most given up this season by the Cougars, who were ranked sixth nationally in defense coming into the game.
