Huntington Beach High School, one of 12 Orange County schools that received safety awards from the state, was given a $5,000 grant to improve emergency communication on campus.

The grant is from the state Department of Education, which earlier this year invited schools throughout the state to submit applications for safety projects.

A total of 375 schools in the state applied and grants were awarded to 90.

The other county schools receiving the grants this year were: Gilbert East, Gilbert West high schools and Dale Junior High School in Anaheim; Buena Park High; Sonora and Troy high schools in Fullerton; Portola Junior High in Orange; Van Buren Elementary School in Placentia; Santiago Elementary School in Lake Forest; Silverado Continuation High School in Mission Viejo; and S.E.L.F. Alternative High in Irvine.

Rebecca Martin, vice principal of supervision at Huntington Beach High, said the $5,000 will enable the school “to enhance its existing safety program” by putting telephones in every classroom. “The telephones will connect with our supervision office,” Martin said.

She added, “Currently, there are some classrooms where the teacher has no direct communication to the outside. If some trouble occurred in that classroom, the teacher’s only way to get help would be to send out a student. This new system will enable a telephone call to flash a light in the supervision office, and we’ll instantly know which classroom is having a problem.”

Martin said the grant also will partially fund upgrading of two-way radios used by supervision personnel on campus.
