Officer in Crash Undergoes Surgery
A 48-year-old motorcycle police officer was in good condition Wednesday after surgery for injuries he received in a crash.
Officer Joseph Guarnera suffered a broken left leg and left wrist in a collision with a van driven by a 38-year-old Huntington Beach woman.
The accident occurred at 6:45 p.m. Tuesday on Newland Street north of Indianapolis Avenue.
Guarnera “was catapulted from his motorcycle onto the windshield of the van,” said Huntington Beach Police Sgt. R.K. Miller. “He bounced off of the windshield and eventually landed on the sidewalk.”
The driver of the van was preparing to turn left into a parking lot off of Newland Street and Guarnera was going the other way on Newland when the accident occurred. She and the two children in the van were not hurt and she was not cited.
Guarnera, who was traveling about 50 m.p.h., was taken to UCI Medical Center in Orange and underwent surgery Wednesday morning.
