Ventura Man Critically Wounded

A Ventura man is in critical condition after he was shot in the back by an acquaintance while in his mother’s home Thursday evening, authorities said.

Daniel J. Willis, 33, was apparently chased from his mother’s Decatur Avenue residence in East Ventura after an argument led to gunfire, police said.

Witnesses told police they heard three gunshots and then saw Willis fleeing the house about 6 p.m. After running a half-block along the quiet residential street, Willis collapsed on the lawn of a neighbor, Ventura Police Sgt. Roger Nustad said.

Willis was found unconscious, bleeding from a single gunshot wound to the back, Nustad said.

Shortly after an ambulance had rushed Willis to Ventura County Medical Center, his mother arrived at the scene.

“I came home and all this was going on,” said Wanda Salsedo, referring to police investigators who were picking apart her house for clues. “I have no idea what could have happened.”

Nustad said witnesses on the street saw a possible suspect leave the house in a dark blue pickup truck.

“We believe there was bad blood between (Willis) and another man,” Nustad said. “That’s the lead we’re following now.”
