These poised, elegantly textured original and standard soundscapes are pianist-composer Peter Delano’s alluring calling card, an uncompromising coming-out into the ofttimes cliquish world of straight-ahead jazz. Although ghosts of keyboard greats (from playfully surly Monk to urbane Phineas Newborn) bump in and out of Delano’s varied stylistic offerings, he pays homage while concurrently wrestling to forge his own voice within daunting territory. When purists tacitly dismiss the meteoric rise of “upstart” youth as “competent” technicians who fail however to inhabit the spirit world, Delano, still a resolute work-in-progress, conveys the rough edges of emotion and moody passions, a well-traveled soul beyond his years.
Albums are rated on a scale of one star (poor) to four stars (excellent). Five-star ratings are reserved for classic reissues.
