NHL ROUNDUP : Maple Leafs Defeat Flyers in First-Place Showdown, 5-3

Wendel Clark scored two goals and the Toronto Maple Leafs beat the Philadelphia Flyers, 5-3, Saturday night at Toronto in a showdown between the top two teams in the NHL’s overall standings.

Doug Gilmour, Mike Krushelnyski and John Cullen also scored for the Maple Leafs (12-1-2). Eric Lindros, Mark Recchi and Josef Beranek scored for the Flyers (11-4-0).

Clark and Lindros moved into a tie with Mike Modano of the Dallas Stars for the NHL goal-scoring lead, each with 14.

Calgary 4, Montreal 3--Greg Paslawski’s first goal of the season at 14:17 of the third period broke a tie at the Forum in Montreal.

A scratch from Calgary’s last three games who was dressed for only the seventh time this season, Paslawski fired the low shot from the left circle past Canadien goalie Patrick Roy.

German Titov, Theoren Fleury and Gary Roberts also scored for the Flames.

Boston 1, Tampa Bay 1--The Bruins were held to one goal for the sixth time in 14 games this season as the Lightning’s Daren Puppa stopped 41 shots at Boston.

Puppa, who entered the game second-best in the NHL with a 2.06 goals against average, made a save on Ted Donato’s shot from in front of the net with 2:30 left in regulation.

N.Y. Rangers 4, Quebec 2--Steve Larmer is already making a big difference for the New York Rangers.

In two games since Larmer was acquired from the Hartford Whalers via the Chicago Blackhawks, the Rangers are 2-0.

Three assists by Larmer, and three specialty team goals were the difference at Quebec.

St. Louis 6, Edmonton 5--Ron Sutter scored his second goal of the game 15 seconds into the overtime period at St. Louis, extending the Oilers’ club-record winless streak to 13.

The Blues have won five in a row; the Oilers are 0-12-1 in their last 13 games.

N.Y. Islanders 5, Hartford 3--Travis Green scored two goals as the Islanders won at Uniondale, N.Y., extending the Whalers’ winless streak to 10 games.

Green, benched Thursday night against Chicago for poor play, scored in the first period and then had an empty-netter with 8.1 seconds left.
