Black high school athletes have unrealistically high expectations of becoming sports professionals, but they also recognize the need to achieve academically, according to a new study commissioned by Northeastern University’s Center for the Study of Sport in Society.

A survey of 865 student athletes nationwide revealed that 51% of blacks surveyed believe they can beat the 10,000-to-1 odds and make it in pro sports. Only 18% of white students think they can qualify.

Robbie LaBelle and John O’Brien scored goals as the UCLA men’s soccer team won its first Mountain Pacific Sports Federation championship with a 2-0 victory over Cal State Northridge. The Bruins gained an automatic berth in next week’s NCAA playoffs. . . . Boston Bruin forward Joe Juneau underwent surgery for a fractured jaw and is expected to be sidelined for a month. Juneau was injured Saturday night when he collided with Chris LiPuma of the Tampa Bay Lightning.

Arizona’s women’s volleyball team defeated top-ranked UCLA, 5-15, 15-7, 9-15, 15-6, 15-13, ending the Bruins’ 34-match Pacific 10 Conference win streak. . . . Steve Grissom clinched the 1993 NASCAR Busch Grand National Series championship while veteran short track driver Johnny Rumley won the Granger Select 300 at Hickory Motor Speedway in Hickory, N.C.
