NO MAN’S LAND: The Irvine Co. is not only displeased that a jury has awarded $45 million to the now-defunct Lion Country Safari at a trial in Santa Ana (D6), its lawyers don’t seem too happy with the makeup of the jury. All 12 jurors were women, and so were all three alternates. Lawyers for Lion Country Safari call it “luck of the draw.” . . . But Irvine Co. general counsel Peter D. Zeughauser would have preferred some gender balance and hinted that the Lion Country lawyers deliberately stacked the deck. “They disqualified all the men jurors,” he says.

BARBIE’S NEW HOME: This may not be a sign of economic recovery, but FAO Schwarz near the carousel on the ground floor at South Coast Plaza needs more room for its toys. It’s throwing a party today to show off its new store in a north wing of the mall with triple the floor space. The public reopening is Thursday. Says a spokeswoman: “We’ll now have the biggest Barbie’s boutique in the country.”

Lion Country--Tuesday’s Newswatch column incorrectly characterized Irvine Co. general counsel Peter D. Zeughauser’s remark about an all-women jury that ordered the company to pay $45 million to Lion Country Safari. Zeughauser said Lion Country lawyers had excused potential male jurors, but that did not mean that the Irvine Co. was not pleased with the makeup of the jury or would have preferred more gender balance.

IN THE CARDS? Candyce Gerrior of Costa Mesa will put her talents to work this Sunday for the county’s fire victims, along with a lot of her colleagues. Gerrior is a psychic and hypnotist; she’ll even read your Tarot cards. She and friends who are clairvoyants, palmists and astrologers are setting up $20 sessions at the Laguna Brisas Spa Hotel Sunday. . . . Profits go to the local Red Cross. Says Gerrior: “People who have always wanted to try something like this can now do it for a worthy cause.”

TRIO TO THE RESCUE: The Festival of the Arts in Laguna Beach has put together what it’s calling “quite a triumvirate” of stars for a special fire victims’ benefit Saturday night at the Irvine Bowl on Laguna Canyon Road. Besides comedian Elaine Boosler and magician Harry Blackstone Jr., announced last week, headlining will be singer Graham Nash. Tickets are $20 and $30, but officials say that every dime--not just the profits--goes to the Red Cross.
