Suspended Daly to Compete in Mexican Open

John Daly, suspended from the PGA Tour, will play in this week’s Mexican Open while U.S. organizers scramble to fill tournament vacancies created by his absence.

Daly, a former PGA champion, has not spoken publicly since his suspension Sunday for picking up his ball without holing out during the second round of a tournament in Hawaii. Daly is scheduled to play an 18-hole exhibition today at Mexico City and participate in a news conference.

Baseball

Former baseball commissioner Fay Vincent declined to join the New York Mets as vice president of business operations, but agreed to serve on the club’s board of directors. “I was interested,” Vincent told the New York Times. “But I decided this past weekend that it really wasn’t appropriate at this time.”

Former Angel catcher Ed Sadowski died over the weekend after a lengthy battle with ALS, commonly referred to as Lou Gehrig’s disease. He was 61. . . . First baseman Don Mattingly of the New York Yankees underwent minor surgery on his right wrist. . . . Cincinnati Reds outfielder Kevin Mitchell will undergo surgery on his left shoulder.

Jurisprudence

A suspect in the attack on members of the U.S. luge team is back in jail, but a court rejected arrest warrants for two others, a prosecutor said. About 15 German right-wing extremists beat up American luger Duncan Kennedy in a bar in the eastern German mountain resort of Oberhof on Oct. 29.

College Basketball

A six-year infractions case involving the Nevada Las Vegas men’s basketball program will be resolved today when the NCAA announces sanctions against the program.

The UCLA men’s basketball team will play its annual intrasquad game Thursday at 7:30 p.m. at Pauley Pavilion.

Miscellany

For the second consecutive year, the UCLA men’s soccer team has been top seeded in the West Regional for the 32-team NCAA tournament, which begins this weekend at campus sites around the nation.

The Bruins (18-2) will play host to University of San Diego (13-6), Sunday at 1 p.m. If they win, the Bruins would play host on Nov. 21 to the winner of a first-round game between Cal State Fullerton (13-6) and Fresno State (12-4-3).

Steve Hagins, a former standout catcher at University High in Irvine, says he will sue Arizona State over its refusal to allow him to play baseball because of a heart-valve problem.
