Cowboys to Sign Kosar : Pro football: Cut by Browns on Monday, quarterback reportedly will join the team today.

Quarterback Bernie Kosar, released by the Cleveland Browns Monday, will sign with the Dallas Cowboys, it was reported Tuesday night.

The Dallas Morning News and two television stations--WFAA-TV in Dallas and WYTV in Youngstown, Ohio--said Kosar will sign today with the Super Bowl champions.

“The club really has no comment at this particular time,” Cowboy spokesman Rich Dalrymple said.

Kosar is particularly attractive to the Cowboys in the wake of an injury to Troy Aikman. Aikman suffered a pulled hamstring Sunday in the third quarter of the Cowboys’ 31-9 victory over the New York Giants.

Kosar, 29, played for Cowboy Coach Jimmy Johnson at the University of Miami in 1984. He led Miami to a national title in 1983, the year before Johnson joined the Hurricanes.

With Johnson as coach, Kosar led Miami to an 8-5 record and a Fiesta Bowl appearance, then left Miami with two years of eligibility remaining so the Browns could choose him in the 1985 supplemental draft.

On Monday, the Browns cut Kosar, an Ohio native and one of the most popular players in the team’s history. Several fans picketed outside the team’s camp Tuesday in protest.

Kosar started the season as the Browns’ starter, although the off-season hiring of Vinny Testaverde as a backup had him looking over his shoulder all season. He was benched in the second half of three consecutive games before Testaverde took over as the starter in the Browns’ sixth game.

One game later, Testaverde separated his shoulder, making Kosar the starter again for Sunday’s 29-14 loss to Denver. Kosar passing for 226 yards and two touchdowns, but he was sacked six times.
