Notes on a Scorecard - Nov. 11, 1993

Could the Raiders use Marcus Allen, the former Raider and USC tailback who will make his first Coliseum appearance in a road uniform Sunday? It all depends how close they might be to the goal line. . . .

Allen’s rushing average for the Kansas City Chiefs this season is only 3.5 yards, which is lower than for any of his previous 11 NFL seasons. . . .

He has rushed for 350 yards in 100 carries, not much better than Raider rookie tailback Greg Robinson’s 334 yards in 104 carries. . . .

But Allen is tied for second in the AFC with six touchdowns, four rushing and two receiving. . . .

Raider running backs have combined for three touchdowns rushing and none receiving. . . .

Allen’s alma mater will be hard-pressed to stay alive in the Rose Bowl race Saturday against Washington. . . .

The Trojans have won only one of their last six games at Seattle, where the Huskies have a 17-game winning streak. . . .

I would feel much better about UCLA’s chances to avert being upset by Arizona State at the Rose Bowl if quarterback Wayne Cook were totally fit. . . .

Two questions to be answered during this year’s game of the century: Will Notre Dame be able to utilize its bulk up front and pound away at the quick, but not huge, Florida State defensive line? Will Florida State be able to exploit Notre Dame’s lack of speed at linebacker? . . .

The last time the Seminoles played in the upper Midwest, they whipped Michigan in 1991 before more than 100,000 fans at Ann Arbor, 51-31. . . .

Reader Christopher Lehr says the Irish are a cinch because Indiana won the NCAA basketball title in 1987, the year of “Hoosiers,” and this is the year of “Rudy.” . . .

Bernie Kosar should be able to beat out Jason Garrett, but not Troy Aikman. . . .

The New York Giants might have given up too soon on punter Sean Landeta, who was coming off knee surgery. . . .

Coach Dave Wannstedt is off to a slow start with the Chicago Bears but, with that snazzy leather jacket, he dresses a lot better than Mike Ditka. . . .

Dan Majerle put on one of the great displays of long-range marksmanship Tuesday at the Sports Arena when he made eight of 12 three-point shots. The last one was from so far beyond the three-point line that even Majerle had to shake his head. . . .

A pleasant surprise was Bob Martin, the Clippers’ 7-foot rookie center from the University of Minnesota and Rapid City of the CBA. He scored eight points and got four rebounds in 15 minutes after Stanley Roberts nearly fouled out during the warm-ups. . . .

Sixth-Man Award: Former UCLA forward Don MacLean is averaging 16.3 points as a reserve for the Washington Bullets. . . .

Larry Merchant, the analyst on HBO’s replay of the Evander Holyfield-Riddick Bowe fight tonight at 9, had Holyfield winning by four points. However, former referee and judge Harold Lederman, the network’s unofficial scorer, called it a draw. . . .

If you’re scoring, pay particular attention to what happens in the first part of the seventh round and after the 21-minute delay. Judge Patricia Jarman scored the round even. If she had given it to Bowe, the decision would have been a draw and Bowe would have retained his title. . . .

Chances of another Holyfield-Bowe rematch are hindered by the feud between Holyfield promoter Don Duva and Bowe promoter-manager Rock Newman. . . .

Duva is very powerful these days. Besides Holyfield, he has the promotional rights to Pernell Whitaker, World Boxing Council heavyweight champion Lennox Lewis, and Michael Moorer, the No. 1 contender in both the World Boxing Assn. and the International Boxing Federation. . . .

Of course, Holyfield could make a lot more money for a fight against Lewis than against Moorer. . . .

First program on La Cadena Deportiva, the Spanish Prime Ticket, will be a boxing card at the Forum Monday night featuring Jorge Paez vs. Raul Franco. . . .
