OUTLOOK

The Vanguards won four league titles in five seasons under Coach Tim Tivenan. He’s now at El Dorado and Middleton may find it difficult to continue that success. Middleton has been a head coach at Calvary Chapel and Chino Don Lugo and was an assistant at Cal Poly Pomona. This team has no experience. The Vanguards’ string of three consecutive league championships may be over. Budd and Jensen are the only two returning lettermen, but neither saw much time. Budd averaged 2.0 points and Jensen 1.0. The Vanguards did pick up two transfers. Barron moved in from Phoenix and Esparza transferred from Orange. Still, there are a lot of questions. One answer might be Villmer, who averaged 20 points for the junior varsity last season. Baker averaged four assists for that team, which won the league title. “We may not have the most talented team in the league, but we’ll be the deepest,” Middleton said. “We’ll go 10-12 guys deep. I’ve never had that much depth.” But inexperience on the varsity level will take its toll. The schedule is brutal, as the Vanguards play Mater Dei and Esperanza, two of the top teams in the county.
