Cuba accused the organizers of the Central American and Caribbean Games of encouraging Cuban athletes to defect, an organizing committee official said.

German Diaz, secretary general of the organizing committee, said the Cuban Sports Ministry complained that employees and volunteers are talking with them about defection.

Diaz said the committee will meet with Cuban officials today to find solutions to the problem.

Cuba is sending a delegation of 881, including 575 athletes, to the games, which open Friday and last 10 days.
