A high-speed police pursuit through Port Hueneme ended when a 29-year-old man allegedly tried to run down an officer, then jumped from his car and tried to run away.

Bret Lawrence Kingsbury of Oxnard was tackled by a Port Hueneme police officer a short distance from his car. He was arrested and booked into County Jail on suspicion of assault on a peace officer, driving under the influence of drugs and evading arrest. His bail was set at $5,000.

The suspect is scheduled to appear today in Ventura County Municipal Court for arraignment.

The pursuit began about 9:50 p.m. Tuesday when Officer John Brisslinger saw a car speeding down Channel Islands Boulevard. Brisslinger followed the car onto Bolker Drive and Hemlock Street, where the suspect lost control of his car as it swerved into lanes of oncoming traffic, police said.

The suspect sped down Victoria Avenue at more than 100 m.p.h., police said. After turning into a residential area, the car skidded and stalled in the front yard of a house in the 1000 block of Offshore Drive.

Brisslinger drew his gun and ordered the suspect out of his car. Police said the man refused to get out, restarted his engine and tried to run down the officer. Brisslinger jumped out of the way and was not hurt, according to police.

Kingsbury was arrested after he drove a short distance down the street, jumped out of his car and started running, police said.
