COMMUNITY COLLEGE ROUNDUP : Fullerton Scores Impressive Victory in Tournament Opener

Fullerton used an impressive late surge to close out its 92-77 victory over Grossmont Wednesday in the opening round of the Fullerton tournament.

Fullerton led, 41-27, at the half, but Grossmont got as close as 10 points with 6 minutes 37 seconds to play. From there, the Hornets (3-0) went on a 12-0 run over the next three minutes to close out any comeback hopes of the Griffins.

Kevin Carlson had five points in the run and a team-high 20 for Fullerton. Tamar added 18 and Bobby Natoya 13 for the Hornets.

In another first-round game:

Saddleback 83, San Bernardino Valley 73--Saddleback (2-1) led by as many as 20 midway through the second half. Josh Borella had 24 points, 16 in the first half. He made 12 of 12 free throws. Derrick Walsh added 19 points, including 15 in the second half, for the Gauchos.

In nonconference games:

Orange Coast 85, San Diego Mesa 75--The Pirates (3-0) needed six free throws from Derek Roche and Todd Loewe in the final minute to hold off Mesa (1-2), which had drawn to just four points down. Chauncey Woolridge had 21 points, Roche added 18, and Loewe had 11 points and eight assists for OCC.

In nonconference women’s basketball:

Cypress 76, Citrus 48--Sara Works scored 23 points and Yolanda Hearvey added 20 points and nine rebounds to lead Cypress to its second victory without a loss.

In Orange Empire Conference women’s volleyball:

Golden West 3, Cypress 0--Golden West, the top-ranked team in the state, remained unbeaten and clinched the conference championship with a 15-2, 15-1, 15-1 victory over Cypress.

Saddleback 3, Riverside 1--Kelly Gallup had 17 kills and six blocks for visiting Saddleback (13-3, 9-2) which won, 15-10, 15-9, 9-15, 16-14.

In nonconference women’s volleyball:

Rancho Santiago 3, Palomar 1--Michelle Cornette had 10 kills and Brenda Parks added nine kills to lead Rancho Santiago to a 15-2, 15-12, 12-15, 15-10 victory.

In Western State Conference wrestling:

Bakersfield 33, Cypress 18--Jerry Goodspeed won at 134 pounds and heavyweight Tom Willey also won for host Cypress (4-11, 1-4).
