Golden Globes Give Studios an Early Christmas Present : Movies: Nominations, usually announced the week before New Year’s, provide an advertising tool. This year, they will be revealed Dec. 23.

The nominations for the Golden Globe Awards have been traditionally announced during the week between Christmas and New Year’s, coming out in the midst of a crowded season filled with movies, movies and more movies.

This year, that is all changed. Hollywood film companies have convinced the Globes’ sponsor, the Hollywood Foreign Press Assn., to move its nominations announcement up to Dec. 23--a day before the big Christmas holiday moviegoing weekend.

For years, the Golden Globe nominations have been exploited by Hollywood as helpful advertising tools to lure moviegoers: “Bugsy”--nominated for eight Golden Globes; “A Few Good Men”--nominated for five Golden Globes. The pitches were all aimed at the New Year’s moviegoing weekend, and at building momentum for the Oscar nominations, which are announced in February.

So if the Globes were helpful advertising tools the week before New Year’s, Hollywood figured it would be doubly dandy if they could be announced just before Christmas.

Some years it might not be feasible because some prestigious movies might not be ready early enough in December for the 80-plus members of the foreign press group to consider for their nominations. But this year, Hollywood’s production schedules cooperated, as did the foreign press.

“The studios have been asking us for years to announce them before Christmas,” said Mirjan Van Blaricom, foreign press president. “It’s better for us too,” she added. “No one wants to be that busy right through the holiday.”
