COMMUNITY COLLEGE ROUNDUP : Golden West, OCC Reach Water Polo Semifinals

Golden West and Orange Coast will meet today in one semifinal of the State water polo tournament in Modesto.

Golden West, the top-ranked team in the state, advanced Friday by beating Merced, 22-4. Orange Coast (21-5-1) beat West Valley, 14-12, in another quarterfinal.

Golden West, which has won four consecutive State titles, is 2-0 against OCC this season, including a 15-5 victory against the Pirates last Saturday in the semifinal round of the Southern California Playoffs.

Alfred Van Drop scored five goals, Chris Egan four and Corey Delahunt had three for Golden West, which led 11-2 at the half.

Daniel Mathot had seven goals and Ryan Mullholland added six for Orange Coast, which led 8-3 at the half.

In the Fullerton men’s basketball tournament:

Fullerton 74, Los Angeles Harbor 65--The Hornets (4-0) moved into tonight’s final. Fullerton takes on Long Beach at 8 p.m. for the title. Bobby Natoya had 21 points and Tamar Ross, the other starting guard, added 19 for Fullerton.

In Orange Empire Conference men’s soccer:

Orange Coast 3, Riverside 2--Matt Rillera scored with two minutes left to break a 2-2 tie for Orange Coast (11-3-6, 6-3-3), which clinched a playoff spot. James McClellan and Martin Holmqvist also scored for Orange Coast.

Irvine Valley 0, Fullerton 0--The two teams combined for 33 shots but neither scored. Justin Osterfeld, Irvine Valley’s goalkeeper, recorded seven saves.

Golden West 2, Rancho Santiago 0--Todd Jusionis and Brad Walker scored for visiting Golden West (10-10, 6-7).

In Orange Empire Conference women’s soccer:

Cypress 4, San Diego Mesa 0--Pam Prine scored twice for visiting Cypress (21-0-1, 12-0), which ended the regular season. The Chargers outscored opponents 51-1 this season.

Orange Coast 1, Golden West 0--Jessica Williams scored with about eight minutes left for visiting Orange Coast (13-8-1, 7-4-1), which clinched second place and a playoff spot with the victory. Golden West ended 7-7-3, 6-5-1.

In Orange Empire Conference women’s volleyball:

Golden West 3, Riverside 0--Golden West won, 15-3, 15-2, 15-12, for its 90th consecutive victory in conference dating to 1986. Golden West (21-0, 12-0) is the top-ranked team in the state.

Saddleback 3, Rancho Santiago 0--Andrea Bill had 14 kills and Yuma Yamazaki had nine kills to lead Saddleback to a 15-11, 15-6, 16-14 victory in the league finale.

In nonconference women’s volleyball:

San Diego Mesa 3, Orange Coast 2--Orange Coast finished its season with a 15-10, 13-15, 11-15, 15-11, 6-15 nonconference loss to Mesa. Beverly Thackeray led OCC with 23 kills.
