COLLEGE BASKETBALL / PRESEASON NIT : Minnesota, Massachusetts Advance
John Thomas, Minnesota’s only newcomer, sparked runs in both halves Saturday and helped the 10th-ranked Gophers earn a return trip to New York with a 91-71 Preseason NIT quarterfinal victory over Georgia at Minneapolis.
Minnesota, the 1993 postseason NIT champion, will play ninth-ranked Kansas in the semifinals Wednesday night at Madison Square Garden.
Randy Carter led Minnesota with 20 points.
No. 22 Massachusetts 82, Towson State 55--Junior Lou Roe scored 24 points and freshman Marcus Camby added 16 points and 13 rebounds to lead the Minutemen at Amherst, Mass.
Massachusetts will face top-ranked North Carolina in the semifinals.
