COLLEGE ROUNDUP : Murphy’s Goal Holds Up as Master’s Wins Christian Soccer Title

Joel Murphy scored a goal at the 13-minute mark of the first half and The Master’s College made it stand up in a 1-0 victory over Judson (Ill.) Saturday to win the National Christian College Athletic Assn. soccer championships at Lee College in Cleveland, Tenn.

The goal was the sixth of the season for Murphy and gave The Master’s (17-6-1) its third NCCAA title in the last seven years.

The Mustangs also won the title in 1987 and ’89.

Goalie Brian Crosson had nine saves for The Master’s.

MEN’S BASKETBALL

The Master’s 72, Cal State Los Angeles, 65--The Mustangs (2-0) owned a 21-point lead at halftime and held on to beat the Golden Eagles (1-1) in the championship game of The Master’s tournament.

Four players scored in double figures for the Mustangs, who led, 34-13, at halftime. Andy Thompson and Emeka Okenwa each scored 16 points, and Doug Leaman and James Mosley each added 14.

Okenwa, a forward, also had 10 rebounds. Los Angeles shot only 19% from the field in the first half and The Master’s shot 42%.

Cal Lutheran 63, Menlo 60--Damon Ridley scored a game-high 23 points for Cal Lutheran in the championship game of the Menlo tournament.

Ridley made nine of 13 shots from the field, including three of five from three-point range.

Derrick Clark (12 points) and Paul Tapp (11) also scored in double figures for Cal Lutheran (2-0), the No. 8-ranked team in the NCAA Division III preseason poll.

Ventura 90, Imperial Valley 71--The Pirates trailed halfway through the second half before finishing with a 35-15 run in a nonconference game at Ventura.

Brandon Jessie scored 24 points for the Pirates (4-1), and teammate Michael Tate added 21. Guards D’mitri Rideout and Joey Ramirez each scored 12 points for Ventura, which won its third straight.

The Pirates, who trailed, 44-39, at halftime, made 23 free throws in the second half.

Moorpark 92, Irvine Valley 73--Paul Foster, a freshman from Thousand Oaks High, had 29 points and 12 rebounds to lead the Raiders (3-1) in a nonconference game at Irvine Valley.

Danny Alexander added 17 points and 12 rebounds and Sean Martin had 19 points and 15 assists to help Moorpark, which held a 50-30 lead at halftime.

Rancho Santiago 95, Glendale 82--The Dons (3-1) took a 47-31 lead into halftime and cruised to the championship of their tournament.

Matt Kordik scored a game-high 28 points for Rancho Santiago and teammate Sean Amos added 22.

Glendale was paced by James Parker’s 20 points. Mike Macchia added 18 and Eugene Hatch had 10.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

Saddleback 65, Glendale 58--The Vaqueros trailed by 18 at halftime in the nonconference game at Glendale.

Susie Woo scored 15 points for Glendale (1-2), and teammates Yvette Hassakourian and Keri Peterson added 14 and 10.

WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL

San Jose State d. Cal State Northridge, 15-6, 15-13, 15-6--Crista Koch had 18 kills to lead the Spartans (15-13) in a nonconference regular-season finale at Matador Gymnasium.

Aimee Stone and Missy Clements each had 10 kills for the Matadors (12-17).
