JUNIOR COLLEGE FOOTBALL ROUNDUP : Antelope Valley Falls Victim to Turnovers

Share

Just when it appeared that Antelope Valley College might have climbed back into its Foothill Conference football game against San Bernardino Valley on Saturday night, the Marauders’ worst enemy struck.

The turnover.

San Bernardino Valley (9-1, 7-0 in conference play) extended a 10-point second-quarter lead to a 31-point cushion in a span of about six minutes thanks in part to three Antelope Valley fumbles.

The result was a 38-14 victory for the Indians that gave them the conference title and ended any hopes Antelope Valley had of playing in a bowl game.

Trailing, 17-0, Antelope Valley scored on a 20-yard run by Mike Marsh to narrow the Marauders’ deficit to 10 points.

Antelope Valley (6-4, 5-2) forced the Indians to punt on their next series, but disaster struck.

Faraji Aime mishandled the punt and San Bernardino Valley recovered at the Antelope Valley 20-yard line. Three plays later, quarterback Jaime Sander hit Robert Talley with a seven-yard touchdown pass with 38 seconds left in the half.

Antelope Valley fumbled the ball away on its first two possessions of the second half and Sander converted them into touchdown passes of 11 and 12 yards.

Sander completed 11 of 20 passes for 143 yards and four touchdowns.

In a game between these teams two months ago, Antelope Valley committed two costly turnovers in a 24-21 defeat.

Marsh rushed for 109 yards in 16 carries and scored the Marauders’ final touchdown on an 11-yard run late in the fourth quarter.

Running back Damon Hill accounted for most of Ventura’s 78 yards, rushing for 63 yards in 14 carries.

The Pirates managed only 24 first-half yards against the state’s fifth-ranked defense.

Shayzar Hawkins rushed for 52 yards in 15 carries and Rino Marconi completed 11 of 25 passes for 125 yards and two touchdowns for Harbor.

Jon Williams kicked three field goals, including ones of 30 and 40 yards in the second half.
