OUTLOOK

The Tigers lost all five starters from last year’s team, which finished second in league. Their first-year coach, Yoshimura, will have a major rebuilding job to do with a group that hasn’t played together much. “We have 11 seniors on the squad, but not much experience,” Yoshimura said. “There is good chemistry, though, and the team believes they can win.” In a year in which size is limited in the Orange League, Valencia should have a height advantage in most games, with the majority of the team over 6 feet, including returners Reynoza and Jackley. The Tigers might need that height advantage for offensive rebounds, because Yoshimura isn’t sure how consistently Valencia will shoot. “We don’t have a proven scorer or a proven point guard yet,” he said. “We don’t have a lot of team speed and we’re not very physical.” Yoshimura lists Magnolia and Savanna as the league favorites, and expects his team to fight it out with the rest for the final playoff berth. Zakman is an exchange student from Croatia.
